All Ceramic Restoration: When Should You Remove the Cement from the Margins?

Dr. O. asks:
When should you remove the cement from the margins of an all-ceramic restoration? What worries me is that I routinely use a shoulder finish line. When I remove partially set resin cement when it is in its gel state, I am wondering if I am also pulling out the cement from the marginal seal? I have not been able to find anything in the literature on this. How much cement am I removing when I scrape off the excess? Should I wait until the cement is completely set? This would be a very messy clean-up. I am just concerned that sometimes when I remove the partially set cement, it looks like I am also pulling out the layer of cement between the crown margin and the tooth. What do you think?

I’ve heard Dr. Galip Gurel explaining how he is dealing with this. He is using a wetted with adhesive brush and during the gel phase, he is removing the excess using this brush. He told us that the extra-cement removed from the interface is being replaced with adhesive. After that, light cure the margin.
And remember, less is more
. Don’t use too much cement
How do you remove paint from the ceramic?
Thank you
