Cortical or cancellous bone particles for bone grafting?

NuOss, and other bone graft manufacturers, make both Cortical and Cancellous bone particulate for bone grafting. I am not sure when where I should use Cortical bone particulate for grafting and where I should use Cancellous bone. Which of these should I use for socket preservation after extraction? Which of these should I use after implant installation in a socket when I have to fill in the space around the implant fixture? Can I use one of these to regenerate horizontal and vertical ridge augmentation on a resorbed alveolar ridge?

Any slow resorbing material . More important is soft tissue cover/membrane.
