Dr. B. asks:
An article recently appeared in the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Implants which compared the surface topography of different kinds of dental implant fixture necks. The dental implant fixtures with necks which were roughened and had micro-threads demonstrated the least amount of bone loss and bone remodeling. I would like to know what other clinicians using dental implants with the different kinds of neck topographies have observed. Do you see a significantly greater loss of bone with necks with other kinds of surface topographies?
OsseoNews.com Editor’s Note: The article mentioned here is Shin YK, et al. Radiographic evaluation of marginal bone level around implants with different neck designs after 1 year. Int J Oral Maxillofac Implants. 2006 Sep-Oct;21(5):789-94. The implant with the roughened neck with horizontal microthreads referred to in this study is Oneplant (Seoul, Korea).

I have been using Implants with roughened necks and horizontal microthreads on the neck for the last several years.I have not seen any crestal bone resorption even the usual yearly 0.2 mm (Lekholm).
As per my experience they work well, only one thing to be concerned though… not to much data and no data of more than a few years
the possibility of the perimplantitis is more with the rougheded neck vs polisced?
are articles about this problem?
Best regards
