Dental Implants and Transplant Patients

Dan, a prospective dental implant patient, asks us:

I am three years post-liver transplantation.
I am on Immunosuppressant therapy.

My dentist recommeds dental implants over
dentures for my upper mouth.  Have dental implants proven successful in
transplant patients?  How much greater is the risk of infection?

There are complications, a higher risk of infection is the most pressing one.
After saying that, implants have been used in post transplated patients with a normal rate of success, at least in our experience. So find a good and reputed surgeon, take all the necesary precausions and good luck.

Due to resorbtion, I’m going in 6/22/06 for an extraction and potential implant (subject to the condition of the bone tissue as determined by my peridontist). What is the best material – synthetic or cadaver and why? Help!

I just saw one of my patients on monday who has developed an infection at the apex of an implant placed two months ago. She is a transplant patient and is on immunosuppressant therapy. The surgery was performed with osteotomes to enlarge the osteotomy. The ridge did develop a small fracure not unlike hundreds of other cases that worked fine. Going back in to remove implant, let heal and try again later.
