Are your patients putting off elective treatment, like dental implants? Are they ready with reasons why NOT to move forward with your proposed treatment plan? How can you help your practice get thru this tough economic environment?

In visiting the online dental forums there is a general consensus among dentists that the economy has affected their practices - some more than others. One Dentist on a forum was mentioning that his practice is experiencing a decline. However, he acknowledged that "People still have money for what they consider is a NEED". In other words, your patient’s big list of WANTS has shrunk and is getting further away from their small list of NEEDS.

So, what if we begin to focus on creating the "NEED" for dental implants by increasing a patient’s knowledge? Showing patients why immediate treatment is in their best interests can shift them from a "nice to have" or "WANT" attitude into a "NEED" or even better into a "MUST" attitude.

Why does a patient NEED dental implant treatment now? What would they need to know or see to understand?

There are plenty of reasons why moving forward with treatment today is in their best interests. You know the reasons. In fact, if you had to replace your own missing teeth it would be a definite NEED or MUST for you, wouldn’t it? Then why is it not for your patients?

Another way to show a patient the NEED for dental implant treatment, is to focus on educating patients on the consequences of non-treatment. That’s a big enough reason to not procrastinate. Bone loss doesn’t stop during a downward economy!

At the end of the day, Patients don’t read minds. They need to hear about the consequences of non-treatment and be reminded of it. They need to know the truth. You need to: Communicate! Communicate! Communicate!

Are you ready to provide your patients with easy to understand information about the consequences of non-treatment? Do you have a set presentation? Are you ready to acknowledge the economy, yet hold firm in your belief that immediate treatment is in their best interests? Are you ready to provide your patients with take-home materials to explain and educate the decision makers at home?
