Participants will be introduced to the surgical phases of a number of implant cases. More complex cases will be discussed as well. The fundamental rationale will be presented on treatment planning, radiographic assessment, choosing the appropriate implants, risk factors, abutment selection, surgical placement, bone grafting and esthetic considerations.

Extraction Socket preservation, Lateral ridge augmentation will be discussed in detail in lecture format. Participants will be exposed to hands-on training in implant surgery and restorative implant dentistry from a Periodontist’s perspective. After this course, participating dentists can incorporate implant dentistry into their practice or even progress to patient-based surgeries themselves.

Course Objectives

As a result of attending this course, the participant should be able to:

* Understand the methodology and rationale for single implant placement and restoration as well as surgical fundamentals for two adjacent implants

* Develop protocols to implement treatment planning strategies (which may involve bone grafting)

* Demonstrate the techniques required for the surgical phases of implant therapy

* Manage postoperatve phase and/or problems of the uncomplicated implant patient

About the Speaker:

Anastasios (Tassos) Irinakis DDS, MSc, Dip.Perio, FRCD(C) is a Certified Specialist in Periodontics & the Director of Graduate Periodontics & Implant Surgery at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, Canada. Dr. Irinakis is originally from Montreal but calls Vancouver his home for the last ten years. After completing his dental degree and working in private practice for a year he continued his education at UBC, where he received his specialty training in Periodontics and Implant Surgery. His postgraduate education led to a Diploma in Periodontics and a Masters degree in Oral Biology. He was awarded the "McAnulty Memorial Prize" for Excellence in Periodontics in 2001 and was recently awarded the “2005 Educator Award” from the American Academy of Periodontology. He serves the Academy as a member of the Review Panel for the Journal of Periodontology. He is also a Periodontal Consultant for Vancouver General Hospital and for the College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia. Dr. Irinakis lectures actively in study clubs, conferences and hands-on courses for dental professionals nationally & internationally. He also maintains private practice performing a variety of periodontal & implant surgeries in Vancouver, B.C. and Calgary, Alberta, CA.
