Dr. Smolen asks us:
Where might I find the statistics or any article in the literature relevant to connecting a natural tooth to a dental implant?

Check out Olsson, M, et. al. “Bridges supported by free-standing implants versus bridges supported by tooth and implant: A five -year prospective study.” Clin Oral Impl Res 6:114, 1995 … best results are found with a ridid connection…do not use a non-rigid connector.
After 24 years of implant placement,it is not advisable to connect a fixed prosthesis from an implant to a natural tooth. Occasionally in a patient with a light occlusion and no bruxing habits, a fixed prosthesis is tolerated and a separation of the crown/root or supra-eruption will not occur. For safety and legal liability, avoid placement of a fixed prosthesis from an implant to a natural tooth or teeth.
Do not do it!Trust me….
Agree with the above - don’t do it. It can work in rare cases, but it fails nmore often than not
It works all the time in the appropriatly selected cases
Many cases are out there for 15 years plus
Clearly it is NOT a recepie for disaster
Here are the standard applications
1)If tooth is immidiatly adjacent to implant and is is good perio condition
2)Tooth can never be the terminal retainer of a bridge
3)If tooth is the living pontic between 2 implants
Draw these out on paper
It respects the fact that teeth are 10X more mobile than implants
If you have a round house bridge and a couple of teeth are in the mix but terminal abuts are implants all is well
There is controversy about strange erruptions of teeth
it may be prudent to place primary copings on teeth
I have done it many times for many years
It is not a path i plan but general private practice throws curve balls every day !

I am doing a case for my mother-in-law
:) the only patient who talked me into connecting natural tooth (#21) to 2 implants (#18 adn #19).
))
I am using a rigid connector ( to regulate up-down movement of the tooth) with a female on the tooth pontic. That takes care for the PDL around the tooth, retrevability of the implant unit and the tooth unit and my mother-in-law
