Number of implants for full arch restoration?

As a general guideline, all things being equal, if you are doing a full arch implanted supported bridge [round house] in the maxilla or mandible, what is the minimum number of implants required? What would be the minimum number of implants for an implant retained removable overdenture? How many additional implants do you recommend to compensate for the risk of failure of one or more implants?
