Molar Extraction: Do I Need a Bone Graft if I Don’t Plan to Get a Dental Implant?

I am having a molar extracted. The very last tooth on the top. I am being told to have a bone graft as well to preserve the ridge. The bone graft is quite expensive. I really doubt that I will ever be getting a dental implant. So is the bone graft something that I really need to have done? What are the risks if I don’t get the bone graft?

Bone graft (also known as extraction site preservation bone graft) helps to preserve the bone and prevent bone loss and shrinkage over time. If you are not considering implant, then it may not be as crucial to have the bone graft done. However, many of my patients have changed their mind later and wanted implant replacement and it is always good to know that there is sufficient bone available to do that and avoid more costly and more invasive bone grafting procedures later. If the tooth is the very last molar on top and you don't plan to get an implant, or don't anticipate loosing all your upper teeth and needing a denture, I would say no, you don't need a bone graft. The only risk of not getting a bone graft is loosing bone in that area and having the opposing molar supraerupt (grow), affecting the bite, then not having enough bone to place an implant without sinus grafting. Ultimately only you can decide what you want to do. Good luck! Carlos A. Boudet, DDS, DICOI

From all the research i have done so far, to my understanding that opposite tooth grows regardless of having a bone graft because the opposite tooth will still be gone after an extraction of the upper tooth. I had a bottom molar extracted although the crown had come off last november 2015 so the upper tooth above it has grown but not by too much. So it could happen quicker or take years and years for it to be an issue.

I have the same question as Donna above. My husband (72 years old) is getting a partial expanded due to the recommended tooth extraction. Is the additional $1300 for bone graft and "Membrane In Site" worth it at the age of 72? Thank you.

I had a root canal and gold crown done #2 tooth) 12 years ago by an endodontist (very expensive). I just learned that I have an absess on this tooth and an mri showed the root was fractured and they now have to pull the tooth. I have never had to have a tooth pulled, other than my 4 wisdom teeth (I see a dentist every 6 months). The new endodontist wants to do a bone graph. I am 54 and have a total knee (4 years ago) - is this dangerous? Why do I need a bone graph? Why didn't this root canal and cap protect my tooth? Not happy about paying twice on the same tooth. . . I had braces as a youngster, and have worn retainers for a long time and worry what this will do to my teeth.

I need to have all of my teeth extracted and get dentures. I will not be getting implants. My dentist is recommending bone grafts for all teeth being extracted. Is this necessary?

I am having all teeth but three on the bottom pulled. Will bone grafting help with my facial structure?

I had a extraction upper left side. Had a bone graph put in pending an implant. Can I change my mind about the implant even with having the bone graph?
