For those of you who use an antibiotic prophylaxis prior to implant installation, what is your opinion of using amoxicillin versus azithromycin, especially considering recent publications on azithromycin benefits? 1
Editors Note: There is a controversial issue in implant surgery regarding the indications for antibiotic prophylaxis in the healthy patient or patient without significant co-morbidities prior to implant installation. Some of the literature demonstrates an advantage, in that a prophylactic dose reduces early implant complications. A recent study 1 concluded that:

Azithromycin was available at the surgical site for a longer period of time than amoxicillin, and patients taking azithromycin exhibited lower levels of specific proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines in GCF and PICF. Thus, preoperative azithromycin may enhance resolution of postoperative inflammation to a greater extent than amoxicillin.
