Synthetic Grafting Materials for Sinus Augmentation?

Even though collagen membranes seem to remain the standard in sinus augmentation procedures, other kinds of membranes may provide adequate coverage. A recent study 1 analyzed the histological quality and histomorphometric quantity of newly formed bone (NB) in a maxillary sinus graft using biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) and a polyethylene glycol (PEG) membrane.

The results:

No implant failure was observed in the 14- to 45-month follow-up period after maxillary sinus floor augmentation procedure and in the 8- to 39-month follow-up period after implant loading. The use of a hydrogel PEG membrane to protect BCP proved to be a valuable grafting procedure to enhance the vital bone formation in the maxillary sinus floor augmentation procedure.

Anyone else using synthetic materials for sinus lifts? How are the results when compared to traditional materials?

I have been using Perioglas by Novabone for sinus elevations for the past 8 years. It is a bioactive glass that completely resorbs and regenerates bone. My first patient using Perioglas for sinus augmentation with three implants is doing great. Implants are integrated and no signs of any issues. I do not use any type of membrane when I do my sinus elevation. I have done many elevations using Perioglas without a membrane. Great product, it has made my life easier.

I have been working with Novabone dental putty for sinus augmentation since 6 years with great results also, we have reported minimally invasive crestal sinus augmentation technique using this materials unique property to hydrolically elevate the membrane. I have been using products from Steiner for quite some time now with excellent results. All synthetic with tons of research to back it up.

Routine for about 14 years, many benefits , biocompatible , Bacteriostatic , stable ( the ones I have used ) and result in very high percentage of new Host Bone ( My core samples ) as well as no/low post operative pain ( no one takes pain medication the following day , although swelling 2 -3 days later due to Dask entry ) .. Plus as fully bio-absorbable over time can assess the case by merely using radiographs ....no "false " picture of residual material ..... In sinus many thing work ... even no graft if done correctly . But I like the Osteo-inductive Potential of CaP materials Regards ... I will post a simplified sinus case video on this site if possible

I have been using almost anything out there in sinuses with great success. We know today that everything works in the sinus even without any graft. I have used Novabone a lot in crestal approach sinuses(which I do mostly nowadays with osseodensification) and found it to be easy to use with a good predictabilty and turnover to new bone formation.
