Nikita, a dental implant patient asks:
I am pregnant and nursing. I had an extraction, bone graft and dental implant placed recently. The oral surgeon placed collagen over the graft site and advised me that it was safe. However everything I am seeing online indicates it is contraindicated for pregnant and nursing women. Who is correct? Please advise if you have accurate information on this.

I know that injected collagen (for lip augmentation) are contraindicated. As for a resorbable collagen membrane over the bone graft, it serves as only a bandaid until your gum tissue heals. There are breakdown products of collagen, which is made up of mostly protein building blocks called amino acids. I dont see the concern at all. Over the counter drugs and presciption medications would have more of an effect during your pregnancy than a simple collagen covering. Only contraindication would be for potential infection risk.

More importantly, unless this was an emergent and necessary procedure, it should have been avoided during pregnancy. All elective procedures are delayed until post-partum. Emergency procedures are done regardless of term.

All collagen sheets for dental use are derived from the Achile’s tendon or hide of a cow. The processing renders them completely sterile and most are then gamma radiation sterilized in the package just in case. It is therefore impossible to get an infection from the collagen. The issue is one of testing. Since one of these products have been tested on pregnant women the manufacturers must state that they are not safe for use in pregnancy. Finally your situation sounds like the material was used as a wound dressing at the time of extraction. In this instance it very quickly resorbs. So you have a perfectly safe material that was only used as an oral band-aid and was gone in about 14 days. I hope that puts your mind to rest.

I fully agree with the opinions expressed that it was just like a band aid and not to be concerned so much
