Inadequate Interproximal Bone Volume: Possibility of Bone Loss?

Dr. I. asks:
I replaced a missing upper first bicuspid with an implant 6 months prior. The interproximal bone between the dental implant and the cuspid anterior to it was approximately 1.25 mm. I uncovered the implant 3 months later and found it had successfully osseointegrated. I placed a standard abutment and temporary crown at that visit. 6 weeks later I took a radiograph and found that there has been no bone loss. The implant and cuspid are asymptomatic. Is there still a possibility of bone loss due to the pre-operative inadequate interproximal bone volume? How would you handle this?

You will get bone die back to the level of the rough surface or end of the machined collar at best depending on your implant connection design. You may get further bone loss due to the lack of adequate interproximal space. Nothing you can do now.
