Patient with Metal Allergies: What are the options?

Last Updated: Mar 26, 2012

Dr. O. asks:
I have a new patient who I have treatment planned for implants. She presents with true allergies to vanadium, nickel, zinc and iron chloride. Are there any implant systems that I could use to safely treat her? Anybody have any ideas on how I can treat this patient?

If you insist in implant rehab, go with zirconia implants that are absolutely non allergic, they work well and allow you to do allmost everything you can do with titanium implants. Just remember that they have the same weaknesses as ti implants and are somewhat more sensitive to early loading. The reconst should be full ceramic too (certainly) Best of luck Alex

If you Do zirconia implants, its recommended to wait twice as long to place and restore them as you would with conventional placement.

There is a totally metal-free implant available from France. Dr jean-Pierre Cougoulic has successfully been placing them for the last 15 years You can get him at [email protected]. Zirconia is strictly speaking a metal due to its position on the Periodic Table. Because it is sintered at high temps ,its outer layer reacts like a ceramic. I have had success (and failures) with both types The tri-calcium impregnated Frnch implant makes immunological sense to me,when dealing with true allergic patients

If you are considering dental implants and are known to have allergies to different substances it is recommended that you be tested by either your primary care physician or an allergist to determine if titanium might cause a reaction.
