Dental Implant or root canal for canine tooth?

Last Updated: Nov 25, 2014

I was told I need a root canal but not much tooth is left. If I get a crown placed on my canine tooth, the dentist says it’s likely later on it will break and then I’ll need to get it extracted. Should I just go ahead and get a dental implant because the dentist says it’s only a matter of time before I’ll have to get an implant?

If you have a millimeter or more of the tooth showing above the gum all around, it is better to save the tooth by doing a root canal, a post and core and a crown. Less than that there is not enough tooth structure to give you a strong long lasting reconstruction. The implant may be stronger, but I prefer saving a tooth if possible and the implant option will still be there if you need it in the future. Good luck! Dr. Carlos Boudet
