Once you have had gum disease, known as periodontal disease, you need to be aware that you are susceptible to having gum and bone breakdown again if you are not following up with proper maintenance care.Periodontal (Gum) disease is a chronic condition similar to diabetes or heart disease that is not “cured” but rather “managed.” That being said, if your periodontal (gum) disease is under control, dental implants can be a wonderful treatment option for you to replace missing teeth. They will need to be cared for the same way that you care for your teeth. That means being diligent with brushing and flossing at home as well as following up with your dentist and periodontist for routine cleanings and evaluations. Of course, prior to dental implant placement, you should check to make sure that there is no active gum disease going on that might compromise the success of your dental implant procedure(s).
