During a recent discussion on OsseoNews.com, several posts recommended the Thommen mono-torque wrench and stated that adapters were available for other systems. I have been unable to find any adapters and the compatible inserts are specific only for the Thommen SPI system. Any additional info or suggestions from those who have this torque wrench? Also, since there has been some discussion on the accuracy and reliability of break-open type torque wrenches, have any of you found any clinically significant difference between these and other torque wrench designs?

The Thommen SPI mono torque wrench has a latch insert for the wrench. (it is the same insert that delivers the SPI Implant) With that insert you can use any other company’s latch type tip. Please look to contact your local rep. The reps. hired here are industry vetrans with knowledge of all of the major systems and many of the smaller ones too. My clients and assistants have been beyond satisfied with their decision to purchase this wrench.

Latch order #’s to fit Thommen Torque driver
    Astra order # 22548 and 549
    Nobel order # 29152
    Straumann # 046.401
    3i # PHDO2n and RASH3N
All you need to do is ask your local rep for the latch driver only and this will fit the Thommen Torque driver.
Most reps would hit me hard for this info but we are here to help and not gouge.

3I and Nobel Biocare have the same latch type wrench. So they, as well as Thommen, would be considered a “universal wrench”

  • C. W. Emery August 27th, 2008

Any torque wrench on the market can be made a universal wrench with the addition of conversion adaptors. The standard connection for a number of years has been a 4mm square. For those with 4mm square head drivers, they can be used with other torque wrenches with the purchase of an adaptor for about the same cost as a latch driver. There is also a 4mm square head adaptor that accepts latch type drivers.

There are about 12 different driver sizes used by the various implant systems in North America. Some needed drivers are not available with a latch type connection.

    All true
    But for $350.00 for Thommen
Nobel and 3i are significantly more and arguable less accurate and more complex.
Thommen is one piece milled titanium

Thommen’s wrench is all one piece, does not need to be calibrated and from what I understand has been tested to 1M test cycles without incidence. All other wrenches have to be broken down at some point in their useful life and additional costs apply.

is it possible to use a Nobel rachets with 3i’s screw driver?!!!!

  • C. W. Emery September 9th, 2008

Regarding the use of a Nobel rachet with a 3I driver, the answer depends on the driver. ITL Dental has an adaptor that will fit into the Nobel wrench that accepts the 4mm square head driver used by 3I and other implant systems.

All the components for Nobel, Thommen, Straumann and 3i components can be found at Salvin.com
A latch type insert is available for all types of systems.
If the torque wrench has a square head, salvin also has everything.
I use the Nobel torque wrench for Zimmer, Biohorizons, 3i, Nobel, Astra and Straumann implants.
Of course most reps will say they are not compatible : they are and it works. ( They want to sell your there torque wrench) One torque wrench for all is better and much cheaper.
