Retained deciduous tooth: can I place an implant?

Last Updated: May 19, 2016

Are retained deciduous tooth roots resorbed and replaced by bone? Should I be concerned if I place an implant?

I plan to remove this retained deciduous molar and place an implant at the #29 site. The patient is 20 years old and when she completes orthodontic treatment, I am planning on placing an implant at this site. Is that bone where the root structure of the tooth should be?

Should be no issue and now there is even a machine that crushes tooth material for grafting ( Kometa ). It will be replaced by host bone over time .. Peter

I love a retained deciduous it holds the spot open! Just be sure and check the alveolar width, may need an onlay graft with ct graft since the bone does not develop well in this scenario. Still pondering the ground up dentin technique, I see this resorption in cornectomies. Like the concept and Peter gives good advice!
