Debonding of zirconia crowns from Titanium abutment?

I have been having a problem with zirconia crowns debonding from titanium abutments. The failure occurs at the titanium-cement bond. The debonded crowns still have the cement bonded to their intaglio surface. I am planning on using Monobond Plus (Ivoclar Vivadent). Does anybody have any tips for using this with titanium abutments and zirconia crowns? Have any of you tried this? Any other suggestions for cement and bonding agent for this situation?

Hi, I have bonded hundreds of Zirconia crowns to titanium abutments. I have only had one de-bond and that was my fault. I use Ivoclar's Multilink Implant System Pack. Very easy and it works well. Use as directed. I hope this helps,' David Kochberg R.D.T.

nothing really "bonds" to titanium. Make sure the abutment is roughened with grooves or coarse sandblasting so there is mechanical retention. I don't use bonding cements with zirconium. The material is strong enough without any reinforcement. I use RelyX and have used this pretty much exclusively.

You don't really "bond" to zirconia either, therefore the cement is a space filler and thus should be a rigid material upon set. That said, the principles of retention apply, i.e. approximate contact between materials for proper cement thickness, axial wall length, limited tapered walls, surface characteristics etc. It would be helpful to know if you are referring to Ti-base abutments or crowns cemented onto abutments in vivo.

Excellent choice. Multilink Implant System kit, includes Monobond, 2 shades of luting composite. Use the HO shade. Great for masking titanium. Never had problem.

Depending on which surface the cement is not creating a bonding force with might change the answer. If the cement is bonding to the crown but not the Titanium then you might try to roughen the surface to get some mechanical retention. If the cement is not bonding to the Zirconia crown then you might try a cleaning step with Ivoclean as sometimes phospholipids from the saliva during try in can bond to the surface and not permit the cement to create bonding chemical links. http://www.dentaleconomics.com/articles/print/volume-102/issue-12/practice/a-cleaning-solution-for-zirconia-oxide-restorations.html

Besides creating a rough surface on the titanium abutment, and using the cement system as recommended by the manufacturer, you can check to make sure the abutment is not excessively tapered, and the occlusion is not the culprit. Also sometimes it is best to use a custom abutment instead of trying to cement a molar crown onto a small prefabricated abutment.
