Drawing Blood for PRP Preparation: What Does Your State Allow?

Last Updated: Feb 28, 2011

Dr M. asks:

I practice in California. I place implants and do bone grafts. I would like to incorporate PRP (Plate Rich Plasma) into my grafting protocols. However, I have been advised by the California State Dental Board that drawing blood is out of the scope of practice of a dentist. How are others dealing with drawing blood for the purpose of PRP preparation in other states? Are general dentists in other states drawing blood and preparing PRP for use in bone grafting?

I am practice in the UK and have been taking blood for the PRGF procedure (developed by BTI) for my patients, which I think is a more more effective system for soft and hard tissue regeneration. Although I do not practice in the USA I would suggest taking a formal phlebotomy course so there are no issues with this. Best regards.

I cannot speak for all of the state boards, but I must pose this question. Can dentists do IV sedation in California. If so, you can certainly start a line within those parameters. In many GPR residencies, drawing blood is an integral part of that training. Do specialists start lines for sedation within your state. If so, any dental licensee should be able to do the same. If the state board has specific limitations regarding phlebotomy, simply hire a licensed phlebotomist to come in and draw blood for you and build this into the fee. RJM

I agree, take the course. We are doctors so there is no big issue.

Iam a general dentist (Dental Implantologist) in Orlando that has placed and restored dental implants for 38 years. I have done IV sedation for thirty two and PRP for ten. The soft tissue healing using PRP will make you look twice.Find a way to provide this service for you patients you will not regret it.

There is a comparison chart for PRP vs. PRGF vs. PRF on the intra-lock website. It is in the PRF module. The chart covers every aspect of each modality from preparation to biologic activity. RJM

Thanks for all your replies. I plan on getting a Phlebotomy license to be on the safe side. But I do find it odd that we can't draw blood regardless of being taught in dental school. I also think many dentists in California are drawing blood without knowledge of what the dental board feels. FYI felow is the comment I received from the dental board of California... "Your scope of practice does not include phlebotomy (drawing of blood). In California, you must be license (certified) to perform phlebotomy. I would refer to the California Dept. of Health Services with further questions along this line. Sincerely, XXXXXXXXXX Dental Board of California Licensing Analyst"

Hi Dr. M, Do you have an update as to Ca Dental Board ruling prohibiting dentists from performing phlebotomy? Is there any change since 2011 when you posted the license analyst's answer? Thank you in advance for your reply, John

The california dental practice act allows one to do anything that is related to oral health. Taking blood to graft PRP or PRF is well within the scope of dental treatment as is hip bone asperation.
