Liver Transplant Patient: Treatment Plan for Dental Implants?
Last Updated: Apr 01, 2012
I have a patient I would like to treatment plan for dental implants who had a liver transplant 2-years prior. Â The patient is current stable with no evidence of graft versus host disease [GVHD]. Â I have never encountered this type of situation, so I have several questions. Are there any absolute or relative contra-indications for installing implants in this patient? Â Are there any special precautions that I should take for the surgical phase? Â Are there any modifications in my usual protocol such as using or not using a particular local anesthetic or concentration? Â What kind of antibiotic coverage for the surgery do you recommend? Will this patient be more prone to post-surgical complications? Â Should I expect more bleeding? Â If the patient is taking corticosteroids, should I be considering supplemental corticiosteroids? Â Does the liver transplant have any impact on prognosis?
