Locator Attachments: Best Material to Connect Housing to the Overdenture?

Last Updated: Mar 28, 2011

Dr. P. asks:
I would like to start using the Locator attachments to retain overdentures. What is the best material to use to connect the Locator metal housing to the overdenture undersurface [intaglio surface]? Some of the self-cure acrylics smell bad and burn the tissue. I am just wondering if there are alternatives. In research techniques for attachment, some experts recommend drilling a hole through the lingual surface of the overdenture to visualize the housing snapped on to the abutment. What do you recommend for the best technique to attach the housing to the overdenture?

Try ERA PickUP. It's very quick and easy, no smell etc. Very nice finish. Comes in its own syringe with automixing tips. Couldnt be easier.

Use Triad light cured Gel. If you go to Zest's website you will see in the instruction panel " Dr. Bain's technique" for picking up the housings I/orally. It is a PowerPoint presentation you can download and save. I use this technique all the time and teach it to dentists taking my courses. Good Luck with it.

I have tried just about everything out there. ERA Pick-up, from Sterngold, all the way. Easy to work with and easy to clean up.

Dear Doctor, I agree with Dr Weinberg on the Triad gel. And yes, making a hole on the lingual aspect will allow you to see the locator and to properly align the housing. To protect the tissue from the acrylic, I would recommend using a piece of rubber dam, placed over the locator attachment before placing the housing, this will keep the tissue protected. Be sure also to use the appropriate retention male that will allow adequate retention and pivoting to adapt to angulation, but you may already be aware of this. Best Regards.

Dear Doctor, To clarify my previous posting, regarding the use of rubber dam, be sure to make a tiny pin-hole and place over the attachment and press down against the tissue, so as not to interfere with the positioning of the housing. Best of luck! JC

Dr. P, SECURE hard pick-up material is great, I haven't used ERA Pick-Up, but it sounds similar. No smell, the material is pink and it works well. I guess one could cut through the denture, but I don't think it's necessary. Put your housings on your implants and place PIP on those then try your denture in. You can feel when you have passive fit. I think a rubber damn is not needed with Secure or ERA pick-up, there is not enough heat to burn the tissue. Just be aware that space between the locator housings and the tissue (if any exists) needs to be blocked out. I worked with a dentist who had to section the denture to get it out. You'll get a good feeling after a bit as to how much material to place, but better to have to add a little vs. having problems getting the denture out. It's good to know Triad and even temporary crown material will work if needed.
