Bone Density for Implants: How Is This Measured?

Last Updated: Nov 12, 2015

How is the bone density measured for my bone to determine if it’s suitable for dental implants? What valuations are used? Is there special equipment for this, or does the dentist simply figure it out by looking at images? Thanks.

Using CT scan some information can be assessed. But ultimately the surgeon placing the implant will assess what type of bone it is and how long it requires for the implant to heal. This is done easily in hands of an experienced oral surgeon doing the surgery. Dr. Kazemi

With the increased availability of cone beam volumetric CT scans, the dentist has a very good tool to measure not only the exact three dimensional shape of the available bone and important structures within, but also the bone density. This scan gives you density information in Hounsfield units, and can tell the dentist the quality of the bone before any surgery is performed. Thanks for the good question. Carlos A.
