Is a bone graft necessary for a missing bottom front tooth?

Last Updated: Nov 25, 2014

The bottom front tooth from my 19-year old was knocked out 3 months ago. He has healthy gums. It’s been suggested that he get a mini dental implant. Dentist has also recommended a bone graft, as a precautionary measure. Is the bone graft really necessary?

Hi Bone graft is only necessary if the existing bone is thin or missing from the accident. You might want to see an oral surgeon for evaluation and see if it is necessary. Since it is 3 months, bone remodeling has been minimal so he may not even need grafting. I don't recommend mini implants. For lower incisors, it is best to use a narrow conventional implant which has a much better long term prognosis. Again, your surgeon can elaborate on that and work with your dentist to come up with the best solution. Dr. Kazemi
