Collagen Membrane after Bone Grafting for an Implant: What For?

I was consulting with a dentist about a dental implant and he told me that to do the implant I needed to have bone grafting done and then he needed to also place a collagen membrane. What is the collagen membrane for? Why would I need it?

Most techniques advise the use of a collagen membrane as a barrier to soft tissue cell invasion of the bone graft. There are, however, many grafting materials that do no require a membrane in their protocol. Discuss the options with your surgeon.Good luck.Theodore Grossman DMD

A collagen membrane covers the bone graft and stops soft tissue cells from growing into the graft. The collagen membrane also contains the graft material. The advantage of collagen is that it resorbs over time and does't require a second surgery to retrieve it. Hope that helps.Michael Tischler, DDS
