Crown on Implant Fell Out and There is a Bad Smell: What is Causing This?

After 18 months, my crown on my dental implant popped out. Since then there has been a very bad smell coming out of the implant area. My dentist replaced the crown, but there is still a bad smell. It’s not as strong as before, but it’s still there. What can be causing this smell? Is this the sign of an infection? Thanks.

The odor is most likely from entrapped plaque. It helps to fully irrigate and disinfect the implant site. The abutment extension and crown all need to be precisely placed so that you can keep them easily cleaned. Peri-implantitis can cause odor, so you should see your dentist or surgeon to see about the health of the tissue surrounding the implant. If infection is present, it should be addressed. The treatment varies based on nature of infection.Dr. Kazemi

The odor can be from several sources. The junction between implant & abutment can have a micro-gap, the junction between any crown & an abutment can have a micro-gap. The micro-gap harbors bacteria, producing the odor. Peri-implantitis may also create an odor. Your dentist can check the implant/abutment and adjacent teeth for these issues.Good Luck.
