Does an infected implant have to be replaced?

Last Updated: Nov 25, 2014

I had 4 dental implants put in 6 months ago and am getting ready for stage 2 of the procedure (delay due to a previous infection and replacement healing time). Last week I was xrayed and all looked good but this weekend an infection started. I am currently on antibiotics prescribed by the dentist who did the procedure and I will be seeing him tomorrow. I was wondering if an infection means it will have to be replaced or can the antibiotics save the implant? the infection is not in the replaced implant. Thank you for any info you can give me on the subject.

You do not give enough information to be able to ascentain what is going on and without x-rays or looking at your mouth it’s a guessing game. if the infection is controlled before it has a chance to damage enough bone around the implant to create a problem, then everything is ok. If not your dentist needs to make a decision whether to treat or replace. Good luck! Dr. Carlos Boudet
