How long will I need to wait to replace the extracted teeth (6,7,8)?

Last Updated: Nov 25, 2014

My dentist extracted my teeth (6,7,8), last month. How long to I have to wait to get dental implants for these teeth? Is there a solution where I can get teeth immediately? Is that a better option for these teeth?

The teeth you mention are in the smile zone and normally you would not have them extracted without having some sort of temporary replacement teeth. One solution is a "flipper" which is a thin acrylic plate that covers part of the roof of the mouth and has the teeht attached. Another solution is a temporary bridge using the adjacent teeth. A third solution is an "Essix" type temporary which is transparent and has the missing teeth inside. Another alternative is a temporary held by temporary mini implants. The question of how long you have to wait depends on your particular situation and what your dentist feels comfortable doing. You can have implants placed immediately after the extractions or you can extract and wait. The more you wait,(especially if you don't have temporary teeth keeping the shape of the gums) the more likely that you will have flattened interproximal papillae and bone loss from the facial plate which will make the final teeth look longer. It is generally agreed that the sooner you place the implants, the better. Good luck! Dr. Carlos Boudet
