Lost two teeth 44 years ago: Can I get implants without a bone graft?

I lost 2 upper molars when I was 21. ( I am now 65. ) Since then I have worn a partial. I have been considering getting implants, but I understand bone reabsorbs and I would be afraid to get a bone graft. Before I spend any money on this I would like to know what the odds are that I could get implants without first having a bone graft.

The first step would be a Panoramic x-ray. This x-ray allows evalution of bone height and a 2 dimensional evaluation of the pertinent anatomy. A cone-beam CT would also be an appropriate x-ray as it allows 3D evaluation of the anatomy and is the definitive standard of care when evaluating patients for implant placement. A CBCT determines if you have enough bone in all 3 dimensions.Ken Templeton DDS

The only way to determine the bone volume with certainty is to have a CAT Scan taken. Dental x rays are only 2 dimensional while a CT Scan is 3D. Over time bone does resorb, but it doesn't mean there is not enough bone to support a dental implant.Dr. Michael Tischler
