Palateless denture: factors for optimal outcomes?

Does a palateless denture/prosthetic typically require implants in the maxillary arch region? Is it folly for a patient to expect a comfortable, truly successful palateless restoration without implants, and are mini implants satisfactory and workable for this type of fixed or removable prosthetic? Would a soft denture (completely flexible resin) render implants unnecessary or redundant?

It would be unrealistic to expect all those things from a palate-less denture that only rests on the gums, no matter if the material is rigid or flexible. For a prosthesis (denture) to be really comfortable it needs to feel solid, and a denture that rests on the gums moves because the gums are soft and allow some movement. The denture should allow you to bite reasonably normal foods and you cannot do this without natural teeth or implants to support the pressure. A denture can hurt the gums if you use it to bite hard foods and your diet needs to be modified accordingly. As far as mini implants are concerned, I have seen both good and bad results. If you put enough mini implants and you have adequate bone and don't abuse the denture with high biting forces it should work, but the bone in the upper jaw is softer and the risk of mini implants failing is greater in that area. Your best chance for a successful palate-less denture is to put enough regular implants to get support, not only retention for your denture and modify it accordingly. Good luck!

How many would that be? We have heard from 4 2 in the top and 2 in the bottom such as in the field of so called clear choice all in one day?

THe palate part of an upper denture is for strength and also allows to create a "vacuum" if you will, so that it stays in place. Without the palate, implants, or teeth to hook onto, your upper denture would be like a lower denture, and would fall out when you open your mouth. (Not literally, but it would feel like it). SO without the palate and some poly grip (et al), to create a cushion and some adhesion you can not expect anything but sore mouth, inability to chew, and or talk without major hassle. The mini implants are not just miniature versions of regular implants, but very small diameter, one piece implants. They are made by several companies, a few of whom specialize in only "minis". Traditional implants are 2 piece, threaded inside and out, and more than 3mm in diameter. Minis are less than 3, one piece, and have a little ball or block on the end to hold the prosthetic. Minis are usually used typically where bone is a concern. TO answer your questions: YES it is folly to expect a palate less denture with no implants to do much of anythnig, (as I said). You would need 4 (minimum) mini implants to secure this---or 2 traditional implants with a bar. Soft flexible denture is used for costume. An acrylic or acrylic hybrid (metal/acrylic) is used in some implant restorations as a temporary while bone is forming around implants or as a permanent because it "gives", so the implant is not damaged. I guess I am not sure what you mean by flexible. You say "completely flexible". and I dont know if you mean the acrylic temporary or acrylic hybrid or something else. These are not soft as in you cannot bend and twist them. They are rigid. I hope thishelps. IS your question one of "I cannot afford implants", or "I am unable to have implants", or ?. Mini's are not less than regular, (or if so not by much). Let me know if I can help. Thanks

Is the placement location of mini implants for palette less dentures standard or is determined specific to each individual case?

What do singers say? .. I want to sing for a living /have ability feel my upper palate. I'm ready to buy new uppers and partial lowers. Probably not enough bone for implants. Would consider buying 2 kinds of dentures if needed palate-less for singing only. ?? Be specific plz... details ... get explicit plz. Have adored my Ivoclar set (Dr. Hobbs, Arlington, TX) but want smaller size upper incisors like Geneva dentures or other brand. Plz address the palate issue especially. Thxxx. I can't stand not being able to feel my upper pallet. With all the technology & materials available NOW you would think there would be someone who has designed a way thinner denture without all the bulk on the upper pallet & way more comfortable all the way around. For what they cost denture wearers ought to be able to have choices.

I totally agree! Only rich people can afford implants.

I cannot stand my dentures and I payed quite a bit for them. I wish I could feel the roof of my mouth. I don’t think I’ll ever get used to them. Also, sometimes they gag me. I wish I had the money for implants. Ever since I’ve gotten them I’ve been depressed and I no longer enjoy dining out.

I had 18 teeth extracted, bone grafting, and 5 endo steel screws put in top and bottom! I’ve waited a year and 1 month for my screw in dentures. The cosmetic dentist appeared skilled he is AAID. I never got temporaries ! My question is if ur putting in a pallet shouldn’t the patient know about the pallet before they put on the full pallet! I researched this procedure for 2.5 years not once did I come across any one having 10 screws and have to have a pallet! Would u have notified ur patient of the pallet and let the patient make that decision of pallet or no pallet?? Thank You
