Remove dental implant after 5 years?

I had dental implants put in 2007, #19 went into the nerve. I was told the nerve would get better, but it never got better. All other implants failed and were removed, but the one in the nerve is still there. Is there any safe way to get this removed? The dentists I saw say that this procedure is too risky as more damage will be done. I’m just wondering if this is correct and there is nothing to be done? Thanks

Look for dentist with an implant removal device like the Neo-Biocare implant removal kit. It's a relatively expensive kit so many surgeons in your area may not have it. If you really need it, you can come down to Tampa for a consultation about its usage. It works on the theory of creating a significant reverse torque on the implant, breaking the bone to implant connection, and basically unscrewing it. I might ask, however, are you hoping that the nerve injury will improve if the implant is removed. I'm not sure if this would be the case after 5+ years. Do you have partial loss/change in sensation and are worried of it worsening should you remove an implant you have found to be unsatisfactory for whatever reason? This might be a legitimate reason to think about implant removal. In all seriousness, though, if implant removal has a minimal to no chance to improve your situation with the nerve injury, might you at least gain the benefit of utilizing the implant for a restoration if you did not remove it?
