Cemented vs screwed crowns on implants: comparison?

Last Updated: Jan 07, 2016

I had dental implants placed recently for my front teeth, and now I am preparing to get crowns. The choice presented to me was cemented or screwed crowns. Which one has lower chance of falling off ? Cemented or Screwed ? What are the relative benefits of one option over the other?

Both of these techniques have their advantages and disadvantages..... the screwed on crown is very easy to access and remove it from time to time to clean and disinfect the prosthetic connection ....bacteria tend to colonize there, and it is good to remove the crown periodically, rinse the top or opening of the implant with a mild disinfectant, and to resterilize the crown and the screw.......... periodically the screw can come loose, and the crown will wobble and will tell you to visit your dentist immediately. The cemented crown is cemented to a post that is screwed directly on to the implant.........we advise the dentist to use a temporary cement, so that in case the post or abutment gets loose, the crown is removed from the post, and the post can then be removed and cleansed as mentioned above...... however, sometimes the crown cemented with the weaker cement, will fall off...... also, when placing cement in an implant crown, some of this cement comes through the edge or margin of the crown and may get dislodged and irritate the soft tissue, and cause peri implantitis..... So both method work well... but are not perfect.....you will have to visit the dentist periodically to take care of these potential problems.
