Potential for Complications if I Don’t Use Trans-Mucosal Healing Abutment?
Last Updated: Jan 14, 2010
Dr. TL asks:
I have a 60 year old female, non-smoker. She has good oral hygiene, periodontal pockets 3-4mm, generalized Class I mobility and missing all but one of her molars. I extracted tooth #3 [maxillary right fist molar; 16], her last remaining molar and did a MinerOss bone graft and covered it with MinerOss mineralized cancellous and cortical allograft [BioHorizon] and Grafton demineralized bonematrix which is osteoinductive [BioHorizon] and covered with a non-resorbable PTFE membrane. None months after grafting, I placed a Neoss 4x9mm Bimodal implant into the graft site which wasD2 bone. The installation was uneventful and I achieved adequate primary stability with a negative reverse torque test. There is 2mm of keratinized gingival tissue on the buccal aspect of the site. 1mm of the implant platform is exposed but no threads are exposed. I uncovered the implant 4 weeks prior and placed a healing cap instead of a trans-mucosal healing abutment. I want to do a fixture level impression. Should I expect any complications because I did not place a trans-mucosal healing abutment?
