How to test the efficiency of a physio-dispenser?

Last Updated: May 25, 2015

physio-dispenserHow do you test the efficiency of a Physio-Dispenser implant engine [Nouvag]? Can you use mandibular jaw bone for that? We have one that is dentulous without any sites available on the alveolar crest. Can we test it by drilling into the inferior border of the mandible instead? Is the hardness and density of the inferior border of the mandible comparable to a healed alveolar crest extraction site?

Inferior border is much harder. I had one of these units, my first implant drill for years. I don't understand what you are trying to do?

Hi Doctor: Determining efficiency also depends on the condition of the mechanics in your 20:1 or 16:1 handpiece attachment or contra angle. As you know, handpieces wear over time and there are also maintenance and manufacturing tolerance issues to consider. Unfortunately, most motors (including the brand you indicated) do not have a calibration system, so the margin of error between what you see on the screen (speed and torque) and what is occurring at the bur could be quite significant and unpredictable. Other motor brands, including Aseptico, feature a calibration function that will help compensate for the condition of your individual handpiece for a more predictable result. For example, our AEU-7000-series includes a built-in dynamometer (torque measuring instrument) and will display the efficiency of your handpiece after performing 3 tests on the contra angle (mechanical, ratio detection, and torque). Accuracy between the screen and the bur is especially important for implant placement, where you want the motor to stop at a determined torque level. I hope this helps! Regards, Stefan
