Fractured healing abutment screw: best way to remove it?

When I attempted to unscrew a healing abutment covering a 4.1mm platform diameter implant the threaded portion broke off and lodged in the implant. What is the best way to remove this fractured screw portion of the healing abutment? Should I cut a slot in the exposed portion and attempt to unscrew it?

Initially try a SOS type kit where you have custom sleeves to align a removal drill ( in reverse ) if not then cut a slot which I have done once . Peter

Magnification is important to visualize the platform and fractured segment. Talk to your endodontist to see if he can help you out. That's interesting to have a healing abutment fracture.

You need magnification (loupes or microscope) Visualization (soft tissue may start to cover area) A sharp pointed spreader or explorer to place on the top of the broken screw fragment and a counterclockwise motion at the periphery of the screw to slowly back it out. This avoids the need to purchase a kit from the manufacturer and it works well. I have a video of the procedure here http://mywestpalmbeachdentist.blogspot.com/2012/09/broken-implant-screw-removal.html if you would like to see it. Good luck!
