Dangers of mini implants in the upper jaw?

I have had mini implants in my lower denture for several years and it works beautifully, no problems whatsoever. I would like to have the upper denture fixed with mini implants as well. My dentist has advised that it is dangerous to have the “pegs” put in the upper jaw because of the danger of invading the sinus cavities and thereby causing infection of the brain. what are your thoughts on mini implants in the upper jaw?

Dr Boudet is right on target, as a recognized expert in mini implants and a certified trainer for this procedure since 2006, the largest study completed on success of the mini implant in the upper jaw reported 13% total failure rate over 5 years. to me, this is unacceptable. the caution required is experience, these implants should never be used in unhealthy or smoking patients, never in tooth grinders or clenchers, and never against natural opposing teeth. the strength and shape of the bone also dictate whether this is an option. having placed over 5,000 of these implants in the past 10 years, one should seek and opinion from a very experienced mini implantologist before choosing minis for any upper jaw. we also place traditional and non-traditional standard implants, and we use the best option for each situation. good luck and thank you dr boudet. ps: we have never had sinus or brain complications with properly applied mini implants! Mini implants can be placed successfully in the upper jaw to stabilize a complete denture. Extra precaution should be taken to insure adequate support and stability for the implants, since the bone in the upper jaw is "softer" and this may cause them to have a higher risk of failure. Whether regular implants or mini implants, the same precautions should be taken so that the dentist does not violate the sinuses. Don't let your dentist scare you with brain infection stories. Good luck!Dr. Carlos Boudet
