Take Medications for Rheumatoid Arthritis: Can I Get Implants?

I am 65 yrs and take medications, Enbrel and prednisone for rheumatoid arthritis . I had a bridge and partial dentures for over 20 yrs. I am considering getting implants, instead of a dentures. But, I am worried about how my health is in order to get implants. Should I be concerned about my bone density and the healing process given my medication and condition?

It seems that you are well aware of some of the problems related to the medications that you are taking. I am glad to see that.Long-term Prednisone therapy can have effects such as a reduction of bone mineralization, deposition and density, which could affect the implant’s ability to osseointegrate. This is called an osteoporotic effect.Another effect that prednisone has is a potent anti-inflammatory action and this could cause impaired wound healing and make you more vulnerable to infection.Your dentist should take all this into consideration and consult with your physician for medical clearance before placing implants. Also explain risk vs benefits as it pertains to your own case. Hope this helps and good luck.
