Does it take time to get used to a dental implant crown? How long?

I had a dental implant for one missing front tooth in the upper jaw. Everything went well until I got my temp crown and then my permanent crown. The problem is that I always use my tongue to touch the back of my crown, and it feels kind of weird. As a result of always touching the back of my crown, my gum feels so tired. Sometimes I wish I could take it off, so that my mouth can get some rest, just as what I did with my denture. I don’t know whether I can eventually get used to the new crown and feel it as if it were my real tooth. I’m so worried now, and it’s kind of driving me crazy. What shall I do now? Will I be eventually get used to my crown? Any response is appreciated. thanks

Most patients go through an adjustment period after receiving a new restoration in their mouth, of any kind. Often an implant with a crown on it are the easiest to get used to, however if it does not match the contour (if it is too thick), or if it does not fit on to the implant post (abutment) perfectly, it may need to be adjusted. Please go to my website and look at the bottom of the first page at the interactive dental implant video. It may help answer some of your questions about this also. It may be possible that the crown is too bulky on the inner surface and is not even with the adjacent teeth. Depending on the position of the implant/crown assembly it may be possible to trim the crown back so that it will be even with the other teeth. If the implant position does not allow this and the problem continues to annoy you it may be necessary to redo the crown and implant abutment (post) to better align the crown. Hope this is helpful Dr David E Azar

On average how long does it take for a new lower back crown on an implant to settle down in you mouth. I am 5days since I had it put on Thank you

Did it eventually settle - I have just had a crown put on my implant and mouth so uncomfortable and lips burning. I have had 3 implants and can't remember this happening in the past.
