Reddish Film Buildup on MIS Surgical Kit: Advice?

We have been having a reddish film that is present on our surgical kit (MIS) after being autoclaved. I follow all of the protocol given by MIS for cleaning the instruments: soak them in sterile saline after use, shake them in ultrasonic cleaner with surgical cleaning liquid, rinse, dry (somewhat) and then autoclave. It does not appear to be blood on the instruments because it appears where there was no contamination. If I had to guess it would have to be some of the enzymatic cleaner in the ultrasonic that did not get rinsed out completely or minerals in the water when they are rinsed? Has anyone had this happen to them? Please advise.

I have had the same issue with old Bio-Lok and BioHorizons drills and taps from the Tapered Internal Surgical Kit. It seems that the shiny, chrome-like finishes on some drills or taps tend to rust / corrode (your red film). BioHorizons replaced the surface coating with something else that is more matte finish, which has eliminated the issue for them. I am not sure if anything can be done to prevent it on those instruments that have this coating short of replacing the items. We use distilled water to rinse all components of the kits and also use distilled water in our autoclave that has a dry cycle as well. The companies never had a good explanation other than offering to replace the items that would corrode. I hope this helps you out.

Had the same issue, with one of the big five. They have promised to "fix it", as well. Has to be an oxidative process, from a finish or one of .1% non titanium metal. Bv

It is quite possible, that other steel instruments (steel burs???) that were sterilised together with your implant kit caused the contamination on the surface of the implant instruments. To avoid this in future I would recommend to sterilise the implant instruments not together with others.
