Does removing implant cause further damage?

If my upper dental implant fails and has to be removed, does the removal process further damage my jaw or the neighboring teeth?

hi, actually if your implant fails there are mainly two situations. If its due to infection, yes you will loose bone but probably due to the situation and not the removal. Second option is loss of integration and or fibrosis, in that case the removal is extremely easy and if handled well you shouldnt have further bone loss. There are other situations but too specific to go into in a forum like this. Best of luck

Hi, When you place an implant in the bone, it is in intimate contact with it and should be tight. If you have to remove an implant, whether it is because it failed to integrate or because of an infection, the site needs to be cleaned of infection or fibrous tissue, so the hole left is always bigger. I respectfully dissagree with Dr. Berg and submit that you always loose bone when you have to remove an implant. As far as the adjacent teeth are concerned, the bone loss could affect the teeth next to the implant, but it also may not, depending on the proximity of the adjacent roots. Good luck!
