Mini Implant Technology good for long term denture stabilization?

I have had a full upper denture for the past two years, I gag every time I put it in, I just had them relined and still have a problem even with fixodent, biting into a sandwich or hamburger. Most of the information I have read says mini implants on the upper are not proven to be long lasting. Some dentists say they put in four implants and others say up to six depending on my bone density. I was also told they would remove most of the palate area for the denture to make my gag reflex less apparent.

I have received cost from $3,900 to $6,900 for 4-6 mini implants and a new upper denture. I just retired and I want to make sure if I spend the money will the minis last

Mini implants, when used properly are a good inexpensive alternative for long term denture stabilization. Since they are a small diameter implant , the forces you place on them can cause overloading easier than with regular diameter implants. The accepted protocol for denture stabilization is in the mandible with four implants, but as dentists continue to push the envelope pressured by patients requests, they started doing them in the maxilla. Since the maxxilary bone is poorer and weaker, six implants are suggested. The denture still needs to cover the palate for support. If you want a palateless denture, I strongly suggest that you choose regular implants . It is not that the mini implants are not durable, but that you are asking too much of them. Good Luck! Mini-implants do not have a good track record related to long term retention of dentures. Despite the claims of many, the reality is mini-implants don't compare to conventional implants. I would advise you to seek a second opinion with a board certified oral surgeon, periodontist, or prosthodontist is your immediate area.Ken Templeton DDS
