Salty and Metal Taste after a dental implant?

Is it normal, after having a dental implant, to have a very strong salty & metal taste in your mouth? I had the implant on 1/31/13. The salty/metal taste is stronger every day and the gum tissue directly above the tooth is healing but, is not thick like the rest of my normal gum tissue. It almost seems as if I am missing some of the gum area in that spot. I was on antibiotics before, during and after and I used the oral rinse Chlorhexidine. If this is a normal symptom, how long can I expect it to last? Thank you.

its a first time complaint i m seeing with implants.the salty & metalic taste may be due to medicines u r taking,,may b due to gastric upset due to antibiotics.stop antibiotics & try probiotics & antacids ,, thin gum tissue may be due to less amount of labial bone, until bone exposes no prb. keep faith in implants & ur dentist. gd lk

I agree with Rajesh. I have not heard of this taste problem in 14 years of implant practice. It surely is not due to implants per se . Opening cover screw is not a problem. Wait for good healing of soft tissue.

well now you heard it twice i have exactly the same problem, take no meds. have no health issues. its the implant and these dentists dont want to admit there is a problem with the processs bc they make too much money from them .And referred dentits, orthos and specialists took the liberty to charge my insurance for a ton of procedures trying to figure out what was wrong w my teeth or gums....short answer is that it is not the teeth you have, not the gums. it is the IMPLANT. PERIOD. We have to stand together to get these dentists and the ADA to admit this is a serious problem. But because nothing shows clinically, they deny it. Im ripping my implant out after a second good faith attemp..on my part, bc i trusted my dentist. i was wrong. He knew it was common and the hygenist admitted to me that it was a known issue.

Hello There must be some problem if you do have a feel of salty taste till now. Do consult your dentist immediately. The dentist will check it out through x-ray as well as clinical condition. Best of luck..

I agree with dr Rajesh. It is not a common complaint. But sometimes, the salty taste is due to secretion in the surgical site, although the healing looks ok.

Did you find an answer to the metal taste in your mouth? I got a crown put on my dental implant yesterday and within minutes afterward I tasted a metal taste. I assumed it would go away and was probably from whatever equipment the used in my mouth. I didn’t have the metal taste before getting the crown. But the metal taste has not gone away, and if anything, is getting worse. It’s quite strong and unpleasant.

I have had the same problem and it appears to be the metal that is used to bond the porcelain crown to. My crown is bonded to titanium the dentist said. I've read that it could be mixed with nickel also. I'm having it removed.
Mary

What are you going to replace the teeth with?
Lisa

Maybe use a plate, dentist informed me yesterday that I was sensitive to the metal that is added to the porcelain to make it hard. Had the tooth removed yesterday and bitter salty taste went away. So relieved!

How long did it take your mouth to heal after the implant was removed? I am wondering if it is as painful as a dry socket. (Which took 2 weeks to heal for me.). Thanks in advance for your reply.

I had two implants in 2014 beside each other (molar teeth lower gum) and since then I have been getting a terrible salty taste from the gum margin that's getting worse. Salt like crystals have attached to the implant crowns (not visible but I can definitely feel them with my tongue). My dentist has reluctantly taken off one crown and sent it to be re-porcelained. The salty taste is coming from the gum line below the abutment of the one he removed. There is no bleeding or pus. Looks okay but terrible salty taste that's becoming unbearable. I have tried flossing, normal mouthwash, chlorhexidne and a water flosser - no difference. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

I had the crown removed by the dentist. I noticed a white crystal substance packed hard into the cavity of the abutment. This was very salty. I had to pick it out, absolutely rotten taste and the same taste I had been experiencing before the crown was removed. Went back to dentist recently to have crown put back on, told him about the salty substance I'd discovered. He said it was the temporary crown cement. He has placed permanent cement now and still the salty taste. I think issue is with the abutment material and perhaps even the porcelain crown material. I wonder if some sort of electrolysis is occurring at the abutment site creating salt?? I even had ulceration on side of tongue due to salt. Totally fed up.

I am experiencing the same thing, very salty taste I can not seem to get rid of. Metallic taste also that is there most of the time. Has anyone found a solution for this? Hoping not to have to have the implants removed or any more surgery but this is getting to be nerve wracking.

No help..but what you describe is exactly what i have..the salt crystals as u call them are on my front tooth and the one beside it. the biggest problem is that it makes my breath horrible .and i cant stop sucking and licking the salt as it feels line it secretes, even though with my finger i cant see anything..and yes the implant itself is in firm. its destroying my life...and has for at least the last 5 years as the dentist continues to deny its a known problem they will keep saying that in 20 yes they have never heard of it ....I say bs.

I had an tooth extraction and graph done in March of 2017. The implant was placed in August 2017, and the crown put on in December 2017. It is now May 2018, and I still taste a bitter metallic taste in my mouth seeping in from the same area. It gets worse and worse. Just want others to know that they are not crazy. I am going to an ear, nose, and throat doctor this week to see if material got stuck in the sinus.

Why is it that everyone has the basic complaint of the salt and metal taste after the implants? It has to be the implants or why would it just now be occuring? I have also noticed my post on one of my implants is now showing a lot more. Gums are getting more irritatted, wondering if the only answer is to have these removed. So tired of this.......going on for way too long.

I have noticed the metallic taste when kissing my husband - after he had an implant. Very unpleasant. I cannot imagine having to live with that taste day in and out. I wanted to see if others had this same issue or if it was some type of medical condition. Sounds like it's the implant.

I had such a bad experience with metallic taste, severely irritated tongue and multiple canker sores after a dental implant. It just kept getting worse over nearly 4 months. The sores got so bad that I researched remedies and found a list that included baking soda. Started brushing with straight soda and in a few days it all cleared up. What a miracle. Feel like I got my life back again!

I have several implants. The last one was placed 5 months ago. The right side of my mouth is numb and the oral surgeon said it probably will stay that way. I have a strong salty taste all of the time. The oral surgeon wants me to wait another 2 months for a CAT scan. The salt taste is awful. My mouth feels dry all of the time also. I suspect that maybe sinus fluid is leeching out of one of the implants. However, I am not a doctor, and am the mercy of the oral surgeon. This is very distressing to me as I went through a lot of pain and expense to e\get the implants. I needed sinus lifts and bones grafts. I thought I was improving the quality of my life, but I feel damaged.

It has been about a year now that I had my implants. I have the ones that hold my bottom plate in place. There is about 4 of them not that far apart. Within the last few weeks it taste like I have a battery in my mouth. It's terrible. I went to my dentist and he said he had never heard of this problem. His solution was he soaked my denture in something but never looked at my implants. I think there is something else wrong. The terrible taste in my mouth is frustrating. Any ideas??

I had a bone graft a titanium implant also in my lower jaw, and its been metal burning taste like a battery coming from the implant only, can't taste food at all now as the days go by its getting worse.... been to many doctors GP, ENT, 2 specialists, an allergist he recommended maybe getting the melisa test to test for titanium allergy, but blood sample needs to be sent to europe and have no lab in canada that I know of it costs a lot too! they diagnosed me with dysguesia, another doctor said burning mouth syndrome, and neuropathic pain I just want my implant removed!! I am on an anti depressant to help cope with all this they recommended it they also prescribed clonazepam which i took for a week and had to stop hated feeling so tired and out of it , I am at the end of my rope been suffering for a year and just want it out! I do not take medications ever not even Tylenol and do not want to be on clonazepam. Been told it could get worse if I take it out:( also there will be a big gap where implant was at this point if it cures me I would be the happiest person around and if ond day I got my taste back, wanted to hear from someone who has had their implant removed:)

Hi, in response to Cathy and Mary Healy, yes my implant removal feels a lot better, I do still have burning mouth syndrome after the implant that has not gone away:( but the metallic taste is gone and the burning, when i touched the crown with my tongue is gone and I have my taste back that took a few months to get better, for my burning mouth syndrome I try to chew gum to relieve it and try to live with it it gets worse with certain foods or stress not easy, I do not take any meds for it, everyone is different, removal of implant is a big decision, hope you guys find relief

hey maria! i'm wondering: how long after you had the implant removed did the taste go away? i had the same issue and thanks to this website, had the implant removed. it's been 6 weeks, though, and the taste persists. I am also experiencing a metal taste coming from my implant. When I first had issues of infection, my dentist spent an hour scraping around the implant, which was very painful, and did not correct the issue. A month later, the oral surgeon had the fake tooth removed and he scrapped around the implant, adding some sort of bone material. It was also very painful which lasted about 2 weeks. Pain meds prescribed didn't touch the pain I was having. It's two months later and although the pain is at a minimum, there is still a strong metal taste coming from the area. I'm scheduled to return to the oral surgeon in 3 weeks. I would like to know how much pain is involved to have the implant removed and about how long it will take to heal. Having this implant was one of the worst mistakes I've made.

Update: abutments of titanium have been removed....and the salty taste remains so this rules out the abutments. I now have to consider possibly removing 4 implants done last October to hopefully resolve the salty taste...or just learn to live with it. I have done every scan and ENT exam. The taste started in May months after implants inserted....but still !! Anyhow suffering continues :(

8/24/2019
@Shellie. Sorry to hear you're still having the salty taste. Give it some time and perhaps the taste will lessen. Believe me I know it's frustrating. I'm still waiting for the oral surgeon appt etc. One thing I was considering if all fails is rather than having the implants removed from the jawbone (possible risky surgery); have the gum sutured over the implants and allow the gum to heal. Surely that should solve any salty issues. If it does well and good! Also if there are any viable non-titanium abutments in the future then at least you could still give them a go? I do wish you well as I do all the folk with implant problems.

had an implant after cracking a tooth. 4 months after got the crown on. Immediate metal taste. had the crown removed as it was made of titanium and will be replaced with a cubic zirconia with no metal. had all the metal fillings removed on that side of my mouth. taste got a lot lower but not gone yet. $more metal fillings on the other side to go next. If taste is not gone i will have the implant surgically removed and wear a bridge. Mark

I am now fighting a severe infection in my mouth and have been on prednisone for a week, then the dose was doubled this week and also am now taking huge penicillin pills, apo amoxi clav to deal with the bumps on my tongue and the burning sensation which has now taken over the acid taste which seems to be gone. I have not had the cap put back on and my doctor thinks she can get this resolved and I will not have to have the implant removed. The specialist who put it in has been informed and will remove it if necessary. the hole will be filled using a bone graft from my hip. Worst mistake I ever made.

In response to Maria. I had my implant removed in June. It took about two weeks for it to heal and is still a little bitter in the area. I'm hoping it will eventually go away. The horrible battery taste and most of the pain is gone and I am very grateful for that. My oral surgeon was professional and kind about it. He offered to open up the area again to try and save it, but after multiple surgeries for that tooth and taking antibiotics a total of seven times, I couldn't take it any more. I'm definitely not a pill taker; however, ibprofrin and Tylenol helped when the pain was unbearable. It was an expensive mistake for me to have an implant. So now I have a hole in my mouth. It was the tooth in front of my back molar in my jaw, so the hole is not visible. Also, I needed a plastic syringe to occasionally rinse the hole as it was healing. No matter how hard you try to keep it clean, food will get trapped in there. I also requested a copy of the implant specifications, so this never happens to me again. Not that I would try another implant, but they use titamium in other things too. The folks at Nobel Biocare implants, would not communicate with me directly, so I had my surgeon forward me the material specifications. It took about a month to get the info. I wish you the best of luck!

Hi Maria. There is still some bitterness coming from the area. It's not nearly as bad as the battery taste I was experiencing when I had the implant. The best I can do is to keep it as clean as possible without irritating my gums too much. The professionals said they have not seen this before. I'm grateful for this website as I can relate to the stories others have. I hope the bitterness will go away eventually. You will probably won't see any of these comments in the tv commercials advertising the wonders of implants!

I went back to my dentist. He agreed to remove the crowns to see if they were the cause and put the healing collars back on (in place now for approx 4 mths). He also agreed to consider a diff type of all in one crown and abutment post (connected through the chewing face with a screw rather than cementing a crown onto the abutment) if the crowns were the problem. The salt taste still remains particularly from my wisdom tooth just behind the spaces left! My dentist had an accident and won't be back for few months. My doctor has referred me to an ENT specialist for opinion and the dental practice are referring me to School of Dentistry oral surgeons for opinion. I might be clutching at straws but I still have the Titanium healing caps in place just adjacent to my wisdom tooth and I'm not ruling out some sort of interference from them. My previous post re the salt substance in the abutments still stands. There are small Allen key screw holes in the healing collars and when I put my tongue into those I taste salt although I definitely taste it when I run my tongue along side of the wisdom tooth. I would gladly have that wisdom tooth removed if it would solve the issue but my dentist says it looks fine! I have to give credit to my dentist as he is trying to help. The quest continues . . .

I’m suffering from the salty taste. Had 4 implants done after bone graft surgery and waited 8 months before putting final 4 crowns. There was no salty taste during this wAit time so it can’t be the implants. From the moment the abutments were placed in my mouth , the salt became an issue. I put the crowns anyhow. The salt almost feels like it’s coming out of my tongue. My dentist , perio, and an independent oral surgeon said it’s not related to any of the above. I had a sinus CT scan, I have seen 4 ENT specialists, with no success. Reading your post last night I am convinced it’s the abutments which is what I thought it was in the first place. I’m going to have the crowns ( one piece) removed next week and check if there are any salt deposits such as what you had. Taste is everything and salty chocolate and salty ice cream is pathetic. Will keep you posted and thank you so much for your enlightening comments. I was made to feel as though I have a mental problem. Now I’m angry,....anyhow thanks again

These people (dentists and dental surgeons) are flat out lying about this. Telling people that they are imaging these things or it’s not the cause is pure unadulterated horsesh*t. I am convinced they did not do proper research on these procedures before making them mainstream and are now scrambling to cover their rears. The bottom line is this; we never had these conditions before starting this journey into hell and we may never get this resolved so all the signs point directly to this. I am still fighting bacterial and fungal infections in my mouth and still have sores on the side of my tongue and huge bumps at the back. My doctor was convinced I had some form of cancer but fortunately she is a pragmatist and got the drugs into me forthwith. She says she’s getting on top of it and its slowly and I mean interminably slowly going away and She’s adamant I have no cancer, thank god. I must believe her! She also said that putting metal in your mouth is never a good idea especially titanium. I had metal plates and screws in my body twice for broken shoulders and they were made of surgical stainless steel which has no effect on the human body, they were not made of titanium which is mainly used to build aircraft. I would never recommend this procedure or these products, and I hope and pray every day that soon I can put this behind me. My doctor also strongly warned me that having a surgery in the same spot, any surgery is a very bad idea and can cause major issues including cancer. By the way Shellie you are NOT mentally deficient, you are instead a person who got screwed over just like the rest of us. It’s not rocket science, this is very bad and it’s the fault of the people who are doing these procedures without proper research and development who are causing us to be unwell, in pain and experiencing discomfort. I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired. I am not going to let anyone tell me I’m wrong. I know what’s been happening and its very real.

I removed the crowns and abutments for one week and the salty taste did not go away at all so I put them back . I cannot remove 4 implants to see if this is causing the salty taste. I had the implants for 4 months with no salty taste . Only after abutments were put in did a salty taste appear but obviously it was not the problem as salty taste remained after abutments were removed. Perhaps I do have dysguesia as my dentist is suggesting . I am learning to live with salty taste. Very depressing I must say :(

I am over the infections but have a burning or numbness on the tip of my tongue still. Will be seeing a specialist in Toronto in November who deals exclusively with these types of issues. I had the implant removed, within a couple of days started to feel better. went to a specialist in Toronto and after much testing she stated that I had classic burning tongue syndrome. She also agreed that the titanium was causing the problem. I am now using two drugs: clonazepam and amitriptyline. both small doses taken before bed. I am feeling much better and the burning tongue is going away. No more metal or salty taste. My gums and jaw healed within 4 days of the implant being removed, they said it would take 4 months. It was definitely the implant. The specialist said the burning tongue would go away. I am also taking a supplement called alpha lipoic acid to repair the damaged nerves in my tongue. The doctors name is Mariam Grushka and she is the leading researcher of burning tongue. after one year of hell I am finally on the mend and feeling much better. I have only 5% taste on the tip of my tongue and 15% at the back but they guaranteed me that the drugs and vitamins will repair it within 6 months to a year.

I don’t know anything about Emax.? I had my crowns and abutments removed for one week to see if the salty taste would go away....and it didn’t. So we put them back on. Have salty taste and has forced me into a havitual sucking of the implant. I have been to extremes trying to fix it including 2 root canals of a nearby tooth just as a hunch, also had gums lasered, and eventually had the tooth beside it oulled out..that didnt donit so I had him remove the implant...Then I let it heal, and 5000 later, i tried again with the same result. its getting worse..xrays dont show any problem..its disgusting..Ive spent probably 15K on this front tooth.. and I cant rid the slimey salty metallic taste. Im afraid Ill have to remove it and become a recluse...again. As this has been going on over 5 years. I dont recommend implants if this is the result and NO solution to a commin problem.

My implant was removed November 04 and it made a world of difference in my mouth. The metal taste has not returned, the salty taste is gone. I still have a slight burning sensation on my tongue but it is slowly going away. Going to see a specialist in December for some advice on that. I have a small blister on my tongue that will not go away but the tongue doctor will look a that as well and hopefully remove it. I am not having another implant put in, I am looking at a bridge or permanent fixture that is bonded to other teeth. I am starting to feel much better, no odd tastes in my mouth, but still have a sore throat but its getting better every day. I am convinced that thing was poisoning me and I'm glad its gone. Will update further after I see the specialist.

thank God for this site. will this information magically disappear from record? i have all these symptoms after my 2 implaints on the same tooth..see my rant above.. im hoping this gets traction as i have literally spent 20k on root canals laser extraction of a non offending tooth! and that is aside from letting him convince me to try again..i feel so used and abused by the dentist association in general as i have seen them all. i even had exploratory surgery by another specialist bc of the same complain uou all are saying. finally i had given up...with life..almost suicidal because it has taken my life away..my breath, the licking my chops..its disgusting..Another rant..please someone prevent this site information from disappearing!! sam

Best doctor for this condition is Dr. Grushska in Toronto. She and her colleague have done extensive studies and research. I no longer have any symptoms except burning tongue but its very mild and going away by the day. I am on clozepam and amitriptyline at very low doses once per night. Its magic and I'm so grateful I attended her practice. They also created invisiline retainers, when I start feeling any discomfort I slip in the retainer and it immediately takes the feeling away... amazing turnaround. I feel normal for the first time in more than a year and I don't care about the missing tooth anymore, its at the back side so it cannot be seen by anyone else. Leaving it alone for a while.

I barely have any symptoms left after having the implant removed and being on a regimen of Amitriptyline, clozepam and a protein called alpha lipoic acid. Coupled with invisiline retainers I am feeling 95% better. I only have a slight prickly sensation on the end of my tongue once in a while now and the retainer makes it go away immediately. I am confident the symptoms will disappear completely. I have not had any metal or salty taste since the implant was removed. The dentist was amazed that the bone has grown back and there is no evidence that there was and implant. So that information clearly shows that the implant was causing the issues and ion leaching was occurring. Implant-bad, removal-good.

hey Mark! how long after the implant was removed did the salty and metallic taste resolve? i had mine out on June 4th and it's still with me. my GP (and my dentists) say to be patient, that it will go away. i had the implants for 4 months so it will take some time. sound right? thanks!

I also have had a very salty taste in my mouth since having dental implants placed two months ago. I was even considering having them taken out, but now I'm wondering whether it was the mouth was given to me by the dentist that was the problem. Apparently Savacol and other mouthwashes containing chlorhexadine can have taste altering effects. It burnt my tongue and I had to dilute it when rinsing the implant site and try not to get it on my tongue. I hope my taste returns to normal. Anyone with taste issues who is still using one of these mouthwashes should stop!

hello interesting reads . I got my 2 front crowns replaced last October ( which I have had for more then 15 years ) , in the same event I decided to crown up my full upper level teeth for cosmetically reasons. Since that week I have a constant annoying salty tase in my mouth , as if there is also more saliva. annoying because I feel the need for more swallowing and its only tasteable while sipping my tongue over the teeths, Under level of teeth I wanted to do in a fase 2 , but now im scared that that will double the impact of salty tastings. I don't have implants, only crowns .... It was done in Thailand BTW.

Did you have any bone grafting done?
Shellie
4/5/2020
I had bone grafts done on 4 implants that were done at the same time - each beside eachother. Then implants put in after healing from the bone grafts and then after healing from all this ...my dentist - not my implant periodontist removed they healing caps to put abutments then weeks later the 4 crowns. This whole procedure was almost 9 months . At no time did I have a salty taste until the healing caps were removed and the abutments installed ( before any crowns ) . That’s when the salty taste vegan . With demonish vengence. Both the dentist and implant surgeon say it’s not possible from anything they did. The dentist says it’s dysguesia...coincidentally.....anyhow it’s a year later I’ve learned to live with it ...salty coffee salty ice cream salty everything ...I’m tired of trying to get to the truth there isn’t any... so to answer the original question ...I lived with the bone grafts for months without any salty taste. Have a peaceful weekend - if that’s possible in these questionable times.

Hi Shellie, I know your comment is a year old at this point, I do hope your life is less ‘salty’ - my situation is similar to yours but only one tooth implant on my Canine…3 weeks post op I developed an infection and had to have the implant removed. I didn’t taste any metal until it was removed, Now it feels like someone has put a battery to my tongue. Sometimes it’s worse than other times but I’m only 10 days in after getting it removed. Oral surgeon has said once guns heal he will redo the implant free of charge but after reading all this I’m scared to redo it

get it removed and have a happy life, leave it in and suffer for the duration. NOT worth it. I am going without a tooth for now and may look into having a bridge instead.

I'm a healthy 40yr old woman, no underlying conditions, non smoker, very healthy diet...implant placed, implant has mobility to it and I have a nasty bitter taste in my mouth 95% of the time. The tissues around the implant are nice and pink, there is no inflammation or bleeding. I've spent A LOT of money in that one side including when my natural tooth was still present. So frustrating. For those of you who had it removed, I imagine your dentists did not offer any sort of compensation?

Hi Shellie: I am going to schedule to get my implant out. Horrible bitter, acidic taste ruining my life. Had tooth extraction, bone graft and titanium implant done in one day last November 2019. Mouth never felt good again. Irritated at first, bleeding gums, felt like there were sores in mouth, but there really were not any. Then a couple months later the battery acid taste started and has been getting worse. Going to surgeon tomorrow to tell them i want the implant out. I am just hoping that this goes away after i rip the implant out. How did your removal go and how are you doing?

I don’t know what causes it but I do know if you drink from almost anything in metal cans, it’s literally that. Ever since I switched just about everything to glass and some plastics, it hasn’t bothered me. It’ll be a trial thing with plastic but if you want to skip that part; just remember to always put whatever into glasses, casserole dishes... Don’t use adhesive with zinc either. I buy raw or frozen vegetables as well. Give it a try and see almost immediate results.

Hi all, I had a bad tooth (upper) removed six months ago, and as apparently the infection had come out with the tooth, the dentist was confident about putting the base for the implant in right away. (He also did a bone graft, using small granules of some sort). I was given a short course of antibiotics, and the healing seemed to go fine. However, between two to three weeks after, I started to get the most awful taste. I'd experienced a bitter taste before, when the tooth was infected, and that had disappeared, but this new taste is a mixture of (extreme) bitter and salt, and it has a 'feel' that I can only describe as similar to what you'd get if you chewed on an unripe green piece of banana skin, sort of astringent. I've read about people mentioning a metallic taste, and I'm not sure if it's that, as 'metallic' was not what came to my mind about it. I also get the feeling that something is being excreted along the side of the cap, and it seems as if there is some kind of 'stuff' deposited throughout my mouth, which is hard to describe as well. It's like a cross between powdery and doughy (like tiny particles of well chewed bread), as well as fibrous, like tiny little pieces of membrane from an orange that get stuck in your teeth, but maybe that's from my tongue. I mentioned the taste issue to the dentist at the time, and was able to see him about it one month after the procedure. By tapping on the cap with a metal object, he could tell that the site of the implant was sound, but no scans were done, so even if the implant site is ok, how would I know that the other root sockets were? Regarding the awful taste, he said that he thought it could be the antiseptic dressing he had put in, and that reassured me. Fast forward another five months, and I'm about to go back to get the impression done for the crown. However, in all that time the taste has still not gone away, and I am really not prepared to spend even more money unless I know for certain that everything is truly ok in my jaw, and that this taste is going to eventually go away. (How long would it take for an antiseptic dressing to completely dissolve and dissapear, if indeed that is the cause of this problem?) Whenever I google "bad taste" and "dental implant", I'm only getting horror stories, and I'm very worried indeed. So I would be very grateful to hear if others know anything about antiseptic dressings possibly causing these types of issues, and how long these normally take to break down completely. Also I'm trying to give myself the confidence to refuse to proceed with the crown part, as what is the point of building a castle on a swamp? And it would be at the expense of the very last of my savings too. I am quite upset as I don't want the dentist to think that I don't trust him, but also I need to make sure that we get to the bottom of what is going on with this before any more is done. If anyone who has experience of this could share their advice, I would really appreciate it very much indeed. Many thanks in advance! Anna

I got 4 Emax ceramic crowns for cosmetic reasons and a week later I’m tasting salt and more saliva like you. I’m in Australia but now I’m thinking they use material from Thailand or from Asia as the dentists are Asian, what material are yours? I had 6 crowns 4 years ago at another dentist still emax with no problems at all so I’m certain it’s the crown material or cement they are using probably not good quality or mixed with something else to make it cheaper for them and make more money from us!

I had the same issue. When I did the implant I was OK for some months with the healing cap. As soon a I did abutment and crown I started feeling sick nausea and bad salty taste. Over time the salty taste went away by using a medicated mouth wash but the nausea and stomach pains remained now a year after. The dentist is thinking it might be a galvanic effect between different materials in my mouth fillings etc. SO the next step is to replace fillings to non metallic ones. I also am doing the melisa test to check if I am allergic to the metals titanium etc. Which could be the case.

I have a problem with the metallic and salty taste on my tongue. I wore an upper denture for 40+ years and hated it from day one. 3 years ago I decided to look into an all on 4 or 6 upper bridge. We decided to go with 6 implants for extra support and due to my receded bone structure. First I had to have sinuses implants as I didn’t have enough bone in the sinuses area. I then waited 18 months for the bone to bond with the sinuses implant material. September 2019 I had 6 titanium implants fitted and a temporary acrylic bridge. At that point I didn’t notice a salty taste but was not happy with the rough temporary fillings used to cover the bridge retaining screws. After 3 months I had the permanent bridge fitted with a titanium base plate. From then on I have had a terrible metallic and salty taste on my tongue which appeared to weep through the fillings. My dentist has changed the filling material but it has not stopped the problem. He has assured me the taste would not be coming as a reaction from the titanium and had never heard of it before after performing some 650 procedures over a 10 year period. I find it now gobsmacking at the number of people commenting on this site who are experiencing the same problem I have. It is obvious that dentist tell lies.

I have metallic taste in my mouth after the dentist exposed the titanium rod in preparation for the dental crown placement 2 weeks later. It has gotten worse once dental implant crown was placed and now I have a loss of taste and smell. I have read a lot of the posts on this website. Thanks for the valuable information. I am seriously considering removing the dental implant and I am wondering how long does it take the area to heal as I will need to go back to work. Also, with the dental implant removed, how soon will my sense of taste and smell return? Appreciate your advice and answers

I just had dental implant last week. As soon as the dentist put the abutment and crown in and I left the office , I started having a salty taste. Then the metallic taste started also. It's been a week and I decided to call the dentist. They said it was a reaction from the flu vaccine. I'm not buying it. I'll give it a few more weeks. Not to happy with it. Not sure I can live with a constant salty taste on my tongue

6 implants, bone grafting, full upper denture for over 2 years and not one day goes by that I don't have a salty/burning sensation. Chewing gum is my only relief. Best for about 10 mn. in the morning after I remove my nightguard and then it starts all over. Brushing and water pik intensifies the burn. Anyone found any relief other than removal?
